Dity Military Move - So, you receive permanent change of station (PCS) orders and face the prospect of moving from house to house across the country. Maybe it's the first time, maybe it's the tenth. There are several options on how you can complete your move from a full move of household goods, a personal purchase move (PPM), otherwise known as a self move (DITY), and also a partial PPM or partial DITY.
A partial DITY or partial PPM allows you to ship part of your shipment domestically and let a government-purchased carrier ship the rest. Your weight allowance is split between your partial DITY and your government mobility. The Department of Transportation will give you a list of things that are not allowed to move (construction equipment, boats, airplanes), which are often added just to increase the weight of your move. You weigh your car empty and then full. Once done, submit the fuel and payment receipts, weight tickets and the entire trip claim with the order to your transportation office. This method allows you to access household appliances while walking. This will help you settle in quickly while you wait for the rest of your household goods or while you wait for your primary residence.
Dity Military Move
When moving government goods, officially known as automatic move (DITY), the Farm Goods Office or the Traffic Management Office (TMO) will help you arrange the delivery service. The service does everything from packing your cabinets and china to transporting them by truck and picking them up when you arrive. The only thing you have to worry about is getting to the new location in time to meet the movers. This is a good option for those with short hours or patience, but if you have ever used carriers, you know that there is a risk of items being damaged or lost, and you have little control over when your items arrive. . This option costs you nothing and is very convenient.
Government & Military
For full DITY or PPM shipments, you negotiate with the farm goods office or TMO to move yourself. You start by weighing your vehicle and the empty truck or trailer. After you fill your house and load everything, you weigh it again on a TMO-based scale or truck scale. The weight of your belongings will determine how much compensation you will receive on your travel claim. Upon arrival and unpacking, show your fuel and mileage receipts along with your weight tickets and certified travel documents issued by the field goods office or TMO.
You can get paid as much as 95% of what you would pay a private carrier to deliver for you. This is a great option for members who have the time and patience to pack and move their belongings, and it has the advantage that you can actually earn money while you're on the move if your travel claim is approved. You can even request an upfront allowance so you won't be out of pocket during the process.
When you have reservations and decided which mode of transportation you want, you need to contact your transportation office. To apply for a partial DITY transfer, visit your local transportation office and complete the request by completing DD Form 2278, Application for Transfer and Checklist. You must also have:
You must also make sure that your vehicle has passed the current safety and roadworthiness test so that it does not block the road. Make sure your belongings are in your car or trailer and the things you need are within easy reach.
Military Move Vs. Ppm: Which Is Right For You?
Consider asking your transportation office for a mobility meter. This will help you predict your expenses and how much you will be entitled to in your travel claim. Or you can enter your data using the DITY traffic calculator. You can also ask your transport office about your rights or see them here. This will help you plan your expenses on the go.

Moving is never easy, and the military forces you to do it every few years or worse. With this guide, we hope you can make the transition easier and avoid pitfalls that cost you time and money. With a partial DITY move, you can split the difference between a full government move and a DITY, giving you some flexibility. Good luck and safe travels! By choice or no choice, many military families choose Personal Purchase Mobility (PPM) during PCS. This is often called DITY or do it yourself.
I have seen and heard myths and misinformation about PPMs. Usually, the misinformation I hear about PPM is, "You can make a lot of money! We made $6,000 on our last PPM!" Now you can make money from PPM, especially if you reduce your costs. This can include recycling packaging materials and basically doing it yourself. (It also helps if you have trailer.) But those big bucks people are quoting usually include a lot of allowances that you get in any military move.
But money is not the only issue here. PPMs are emotionally and logistically challenging. But it will be useful to have your things under your control at all times. Having the right information makes it easier to decide what's right for you.
Pcs Prep: Tips For A Smooth Military Move
All service members are entitled to a wide range of travel rights for their PCS moves. These include:
The only difference with PPM is that you are given an allowance based on the weight of the item you are carrying and the distance you travel. You will be reimbursed 100% of what it costs the military to use contract carriers. (Note: It used to be 95%. This went up during the COVID delay and then became "permanent". Like everything DoD is permanent.) This fee covers all your expenses: boxes, rental car and/or trailer , can help you with hiring, insurance and more. If you have money left over after paying these expenses, that's your profit - and it's also considered taxable income.
Even the PPM should be planned within the framework of the private property defense system. You should also call or visit your installation's personal property office to make sure you understand the process and fee amount. You don't want to spoil it!
You are responsible for packing, shipping and unpacking your items. You can hire any part you want—packing, loading, driving, loading, unloading—but you'll be paid the same regardless of who works or how much they get paid.
How To Make Money With A Personally Procured Move (ppm)
If you don't have your own trailer, you'll need to rent a truck, use a service like UPack, or hire a service moving company. You can get your own packing supplies (often available for free on Facebook!) If you rent a truck, you'll likely drive it yourself, or tow another vehicle, or have someone drive it. You unload the truck or hire someone to help and unload yourself or hire someone to help.
Because you are not exchanged dollar for dollar for your expenses, it is
