Established in 1911, Naval Station Great Lakes, the "Quarterdeck of the Navy," is the Navy's largest training installation and home to the Navy's only boot camp.

More than 38,000 recruits will become sailors at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes this year during the eight-week training course. This year we will have 48 site graduation ceremonies that will attract over 125,000 attendees to Lake County.

About 40 percent of those new sailors, fresh out of boot camp, will stay in the Great Lakes for training at the Great Lakes Training Support Center.

The Great Lakes Training Support Center provides training and mentoring to new sailors at the apprentice level and functional support to learning sites (LS) in the Great Lakes, including the Surface Combat Systems Center, Surface Warfare School Command, Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Diving Center, and Preparation School for Naval Special Forces.

Located on more than 1,600 acres overlooking Lake Michigan, Naval Station Great Lakes supports more than 50 commands and elements, as well as more than 25,000 Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, Airmen and Department of Defense civilians who live on the installation and work. Our operations, along with military retiree and education aid payments, had a total economic impact on Illinois of $1.3 billion in 2016.

Effective immediately, everyone must wear a mask indoors at Naval Station Great Lakes, which means all guests attending graduation must wear a mask while indoors for ticket pickup at the Welcome Center and while indoors at Recruit Training Command . The number of guests allowed has been increased to four. If you've already submitted your guest security access form that lists two people, have additional guest information ready to give your recruiter when they call. All guests must have a ticket that includes active duty personnel and veterans. (Children under the age of 2 do not count toward the guest limit.) Immunization against COVID-19 is still required for guests to attend. Guests 12 years of age or older must provide proof of vaccination (14 days after final dose, ) in the form of a COVID-19 vaccination card to attend. If you cannot provide proof of vaccination, you will not be issued tickets and will not be able to attend the graduation ceremony.

Naval Station Great Lakes (NAVSTA Great Lakes) is home to the United States Navy's only training camp, located near North Chicago, in Lake County, Illinois. Major assignments include the Recruit Training Command, Training Support Cter and Naval Recruiting District Chicago. Naval Station Great Lakes is the largest military installation in Illinois and the largest training station in the Navy. The base has 1,153 buildings located on 1,628 acres (6.59 km)

) and has 69 miles (111 km) of road to provide access to base facilities. Within the naval service it has several different nicknames, including "The Quarterdeck of the Navy",

Or more pejoratively "Big Mistakes". Also referred to as "Second Boot Camp" while in Training Support Command.

The base functions much like a small town, with its own fire department, Maritime Safety (police) and public works department.

One of the landmarks of this area is Building 1, also known as the Clock Building. Completed in 1911, the building is constructed of red brick and has a tower above the third floor of the building. The large parade ground in front of the administration building is called Ross Field.

In 1996, RTC Great Lakes became the Navy's only basic training facility. The 1993 Base Realignment and Closure Commission resulted in the closure of the Naval Training Center in San Diego, California and the Naval Training Center in Orlando, Florida, their associated yard training assignments, and the consolidation of yard training at the United States Navy's Great Lakes list. Approximately 40,000 recruits pass through Recruit Training Command annually with approximately 7,000 recruits being installed at any one time. RTC Great Lakes has been active for over 100 years.

TSC Great Lakes is the Navy's premier technical training command. It has an annual throughput of 16,000 sailors per year. TSC supports the following six learning sites:

The Culinary Specialist (CS) A School also taught at TSC Great Lakes until December 10, 2010, when the school completed its senior year. The course was consolidated with a parallel US Army program and transferred to Fort Lee, Virginia.

Hospital Corpsman (HM) "A" School moved from Great Lakes. The last class graduated on July 27, 2011. The last class was class 11–125. The school relocated to the Medical Education and Training Campus at Fort Sam Houston, Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.

In addition, all Navy rates requiring basic electrical knowledge and troubleshooting training complete Apprtice Technical Training (ATT) School. This includes Mineman (MN) and Sonar Technician (Surface) (STG) rates as well as some aviation rates prior to separation to their respective school locations in San Diego, CA and Psacola, FL. Construction was supervised by Navy Captain Albert R. Ross. Chicago-area architect Jarvis Hunt designed the original 39 buildings, and Lt. Col. George A. McKay was the civil engineer for construction on 172 acres (70 ha) of wilderness;

3.5 million dollars ($106 million today) was allocated to finance the construction. President William Howard Taft dedicated the Naval Training Station in 1911.

On July 3, 1911, Joseph Gregg was the first recruit to arrive. He will graduate in the first class of 300. Fifty-five years later, on July 5, 1966, he was buried at the Naval Station Cemetery.

Legdary bandleader and marching composer John Philip Sousa was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Navy during World War I. He led the Great Lakes Naval Station Band from mid-1917 until shortly after the armistice was implemented in November 1918. Great Lakes also had a Radio School that built two 400 ft (120 m) towers in 1915.

In early 1917, just before the United States' entry into World War I, Great Lakes was under the command of Captain William A. Moffett and had 39 permanent brick buildings, over 165 acres (67 ha) and approximately 1,500 sailors. At the end of the war there were 776 buildings, with 1,200 acres (490 ha) and about 45,000 sailors in training; 125,000 received training on the Great Lakes during the war.

In 1923, the Great Lakes Naval Reserve Air Base was commissioned. The training of recruits slowed down after the war and stopped in 1933.

In 1932, Great Lakes had 102 buildings on 507 acres (205 ha). The port was built around this time at a cost of $1 million ($19.9 million today).

On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan, and approximately 6,000 sailors trained on the Great Lakes. It grew to 68,000 in six months; by September 1942, more than 100,000 sailors were training on the Great Lakes. The base grew to 1,600 acres (650 ha) over the next 10 months. By mid-1943 there were more than 700 instructors in Class A service schools.
